Another thing that was new at Summerburst in 2017 was the addition of a new stage in Stockholm, the Garden Stage. It was meant to be a like a smaller Main Stage where good vibes were promised. ”We want to create the feeling of a garden party, where you are close to the stage, can hang out with your friends and dance until you simply can’t keep going anymore,” said the festival management in a press release. This year you got to see artist like Albin Myers, Sick Individuals, Corey James, John Dahlbäck and Lucas & Steve at the Garden Stage. The big stage, as usual, offered a broad line-up of DJ’s and stars. In Gothenburg you got to see Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, who would land the second place in the vote for ’World’s Best DJ’ by DJ Mag later that year. Another one of the big artists was Tiësto, who would land the fourth place and release his song ’BOOM’ that year.
2017 was a year that would create headlines in Sweden. Summerburst has a habit of making big headlines due to the festival’s scope and high engagement. In 2017 two artists were booked that would come to both surprise, disturb and delight the visitors. The booking of the international stars Justin Bieber and Zara Larsson hit like a bomb in the Swedish festival and EDM community. A lot of people probably raised their eyebrows at the news that Justin Bieber would perform at Summerburst in Stockholm. The tweet announcing that Bieber would perform is still today one of the most re-tweeted ever in Sweden. But the connection between electronic dance music and Bieber wasn’t that far-fetched actually. The Canadian pop-star had released the song ’Where Are Ü Now’ together with the duo Jack Ü, which is made up by Skrillex and Diplo, two of the worlds most hyped DJ’s and producers, and his song ’Sorry’ was produced by Skrillex. Bieber had also released ’2U’ together with David Guetta in 2017. Electronic dance music and modern pop had around that time met almost half-way and was mixing into each others worlds. More and more DJ’s and producers were working with pop artists, and the other way around.
The earlier mentioned French pioneer David Guetta is one of the ’world DJ’s’ who have had a great impact in broadening electronic dance music to the bigger masses over the years. He returned to Summerburst this year as well. He had released the song ’So Far Away’ together with Martin Garrix the same year. Martin Garrix would be crowned ’World’s Best DJ’ later in 2017 by the respected DJ Mag, as the, at that time, youngest person, to land the title ’World’s Best DJ’. Booking the same artists to a festival that you’ve already booked before is kind of unique to the EDM world, but also something that is possible when the artists stay relevant and constantly deliver at a high level, while the house audience like to see their favorites, which Summerburst often make sure they can. Axwell /\ Ingrosso also returned to Summerburst in 2017, and had earlier that year released the mega hit ’More Than You Know,’ that would come to sell platinum 24 times in 8 different countries, and was also part of their album with the same name, which includes songs like ’On My Way,’ ’Dreamer’ and ’I Love You.’ ”What they’ve done on the Summerburst stage over the years is hard to beat, even from an international perspective. After the success in Gothenburg last summer they are one of the most wanted acts among our audience and it feels quite natural that they will be back on stage at Summerburst in Stockholm this summer,” said the festival chief when the duo was presented for Summerburst that year. Eric Prydz, who performed at the first ever edition of Summerburst in Stockholm in 2011, did a much awaited performance at Ullevi in the summer of 2017. Prydz had released his successful album ’Opus’ the year before, on which the hit song with the same name was one of the songs.
This year too a theme song was released to represent Summerburst 2017. A competition was announced that asked less known producers to submit their contributions. The jury, which included DJ and producer Mike Perry amongst other names, chose the group Reboost and the song ’Dancin’ With You.’ Other artists that performed at Summerburst this summer was Deadmau5, Steve Angello, Zedd, Dimitri Vangelis & Wyman, Krewella, R3HAB, Mike Perry, Brohug, Steve Aoki, Martin Solveig, Sebjak, Nervo, Seeb, and Valentino Kahn. In the Orion Area you got to see acts like Mad Dog, Radical Redemption, Atmozfears, Coone, Wildstylez, Cyber and Pyra.
