2016 was a year when Summerburst Festival, just like in previous years, was held in both Gothenburg and Stockholm. The festival took place on May 27–28 at Nya Ullevi and June 10-11 at Gärdet and as usual it attracted a large audience over the four days. At the Main Stage you got to see big stars like Axwell /\ Ingrosso, Kygo, Alesso, David Guetta, Armin van Buuren, Nervo, Steve Angello, Icona Pop, Alan Walker and Diplo. In the Orion Area DJ’s like Brennan Heart, Frontliner, Masters Elite, Miss K8 and Coone performed, which really set the tone for a euphoric Summerburst.
Ever since the start of Summerburst in 2011 the organizers had been trying to catch some of the biggest names in electronic dance music, whilst at the same time picking up on new trends and what the audience wants to hear. Three sought after acts that would perform at Summerburst in 2016 was Steve Angello, David Guetta and Axwell /\ Ingrosso. Steve Angello and David Guetta took the stage in Stockholm, while Axwell /\ Ingrosso performed in Gothenburg. Earlier that year Axwell /\ Ingrosso had released the songs ’Dream Bigger’ and ’Thinking About You’ that would come to be part of their album. ”There is something special about it being on our home turf. To have such an incredible festival in Sweden is just awesome,” they said to Metro.
Steve Angello had released this debut album ’Wild Youth’ earlier that year, which set the tone for his performance at Summerburst. ”The preparations before a gig are usually three things. The visual, the music of course, but also the feeling,” says Steve Angello in a video interview. These three things do not just describe his performance, but very much the entire festival. Going to Summerburst is not just about music, it is also about the visual with the lights and pyrotechnics, as well as the feeling. The feeling and euphoria you experience together with tens of thousands others in the same place is something very special.
In 2016 Summerburst went into a new phase as a festival. The festival organizer, SPG Live, had back in 2015 been acquired by the big festival group Live Nation, which showed even more how electronic dance music and house had established itself in the music industry. ”As a part of Live Nation we will be able to take our festival to the next level,” the festival manager wrote in a press release. Following up on the record visiting numbers of last year, it was time to once again organize this festival. In November it was announced that Swedish star DJ and producer Alesso would perform in both cities as main act, which would be his only performances in Sweden that year. Alesso had the year before released his debut album where his hits ’Heroes (We Could Be)’ with Tove Lo, ’Cool,’ ’Scars’ and ’Under Control’ with Calvin Harris, are included. ”To finish Summerburst on the big stage is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time… I can’t wait to come home and play,” Alesso announced in a press release when the news was out. In Swedish newspaper Göteborgs-Posten Johan Lindqvist wrote about Alesso’s performance at Summerburst in Gothenburg: ”it was about finishing this year’s Summerburst with a great bang. And if it was a bang!”

Two other DJ’s that performed at Summerburst in 2016 was the Norwegians Kygo and Alan Walker. Kygo had earlier that year released the album ’Cloud Nine’ with hits such as ’Stole The Show,’ ’Raging’ and ’Firestone,’ and Alan Walker had really had a jump start to his career with the songs ’Faded’ released in 2015 and ’Alone’ that was released at the end of the year. Before the festival, this year too, a theme song was released for Summerburst. A song that would represent the festival of 2016. Since the number of female producers and DJ’s performing at Summerburst had been low over the years, the organizer wanted the theme song for 2016 to be produced by one or more female artists. There was a competition where you could send in a self-produced, unreleased song that had a Summerburst feel to it. The winner would get the song released and also get to perform at the festival, that was expecting 30,000 visitors a day. Choice fell on Natali Noor and the song ’Moon’. Together with a line up of DJ’s with amongst others Armin van Buuren, David Guetta, Afrojack, Icona Pop, Dada Life, Diplo, Nervo, W&W, Nicky Romero, Juicy M, Cazzette, Jonas Blue, Broiler, Dannic and Dzeko & Torres on the Main Stage and DJ’s like Brennan Heart, Frontliner, Masters Elite, Warface, Korsakoff, Wasted Penguinz, Coone, Psyko Punkz, Miss K8 and Radical Redemption in the Orion Area, it was a successful edition of Summerburst that was arranged on May 27–28 at Nya Ullevi and on June 10–11 at Gärdet. Later that year Summerburst would also be brought to the cinema. ’Summerburst: The 3D Movie’, produced and directed by Levan Tsikurishvili, contains parts of the various performances, as well as artist interviews and exclusive behind the scenes material. The movie was released on November 25 and screened at cinemas all over Sweden.
