2013

In 2013 Summerburst had established itself as one of the biggest festivals in Sweden and Scandinavia. After the successful year of 2012 when the festival was extended to two days, and opened up the festival gates in Gothenburg as well, there were many people looking forward to the 2013 festival. With the maximum number of visitors in both cities, the audience got to see artists such as Steve Aoki, Axwell, Zedd, Steve Angello, Hardwell, Alesso, W&W, Sebastian Ingrosso and Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike at Stockholm Stadion on June 14–15 and at Ullevi on June 7–8.

After two very successful festivals it was time for Summerburst to deliver at the same high level as previous years and Demand was high, and would increase even more. In Stockholm the festival was to be held at Stockholm Stadion, as in previous years, and in Gothenburg at Valhalla IP. A pleasant problem caused by the high demand was that the festival sold more than the 20,000 tickets planned to be sold in Gothenburg. Valhalla IP was therefore no longer possible as a venue for the festival. Instead Summerburst moved into Ullevi which took the festival to a new level. Coinciding with the ticket release, it had been revealed in a series of video greetings that Swedish House Mafia members Axwell and Sebastian Ingrosso would perform at this year’s Summerburst – Axwell in Gothenburg and Sebastian Ingrosso in his hometown Stockholm. Earlier the same year Swedish House Mafia had toured the world with their farewell tour. Summerburst had now become a well established festival. Before Summerburst in Stockholm news reporter Zandra Lundberg called Summerburst ”the people’s festival” in Aftonbladet and the same article  calls Summerburst as a success. Music experts and critics who usually write about the Swedish pop wonder and about rock festivals, are trying to put into words ’why’ and ’how’ Summerburst has become this hugely popular festival, while electronic dance music just keeps on growing and the music industry all over the world starts to realize the value of electronic dance music. In 2013 Swedish producer and DJ Alesso gets the task to do a dance version of US band OneRepublic’s hit ’If I Lose Myself’, which turns out to be a hit. Avicii performs with a liveband at Ultra Music Festival in Miami and later releases the mega hit ’Wake Me Up’, with elements of country. The song, which features on his successful album ’True’, becomes one of the most streamed songs ever on Spotify. Sebastian Ingrosso releases the hit song ’Reload’ together with Australian producer Tommy Trash. Axwell releases ’Center Of The Universe’ with Magnus Carlsson. Dutch producers Hardwell and Martin Garrix come out with the songs ’Spaceman’ and Animals’, which lead to both of them winning the prestigious award ’World’s Best DJ’ by ’DJ Mag’. Hardwell the same year and Martin Garrix later. When you tuned into any commercial radio station you were almost certains to hear a song with elements of electronic dance music. If people hadn’t found electronic dance music before, they most certainly had now. Leading up to the festival Summerburst together with the play channel Pocket Entertainment published a mini TV series named ’Before Summerburst 2013’. The episodes were hosted by Calle Dernulf, and gave viewers an insight into the work behind the festival, both for the organizer and the artists. A festival theme song was released this year too. It was the Swedish  duo Galavant who released the song ’Tonight’ which today has over 7 million streams. At the beginning of the year Swedish public broadcaster SVT aired a one hour long after-movie on TV with highlights from the festival — everything from happy audiences, to artists’ performances and stage production. The purpose was to, through the screen, convey the euphoric feeling you get from being in the huge crowd at Summerburst with tens of thousands of people, experiencing the music in its proper element. Watch the movie here. The commercial breakthrough for electronic dance music also showed in the ticket sales. Over 100,000 people visited Summerburst Festival in the both cities in 2013 and got to see performances from, amongst others, Axwell, Steve Angello, Sebastian Ingrosso, Alesso Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Albin Myers, La Fleur, Madeon, Steve Aoki, Hardwell, David Guetta, Otto Knows, Zedd, Galavant, Josefin Rosen and Cazzette.
