2012 was the year that Summerburst was to expand the festival’s capacity. What had been a full day of partying in Stockholm now became a two-day festival and an additional stage was added, as the festival was established also in Gothenburg. This was the summer when we got to see Avicii and Deadmau5 perform in Gothenburg, while artists like Calvin Harris and Sebastian Ingrosso entered the stage in Stockholm. Axwell, Alesso, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike amongst many others performed in both cities.
After the successful premiere of Summerburst Festival the year before in Stockholm, it was a given that the festival would return in 2012. And this year the audience in Gothenburg would also get the opportunity to experience the same euphoria that Stockholm had delivered. After some planning it was set that Summerburst would take place in Gothenburg at Valhalla IP on June 1-2 and in Stockholm on June 15-16. ”We are incredibly pleased with the amazing response we had the first year, and it feels fantastic to be able to offer the Gothenburg audience an event of this caliber already in the summer of 2012”, the festival general said before the summer. When the festival was expanded from one to two days, it also increased the opportunity to give the audience a broader lineup of DJ’s. At the festival in Stockholm an additional stage was added, where you could see some of the worlds biggest techno DJ’s such as Adam Beyer, Ida Engberg, Joel Mull and Cari Lekebusch but also DJ’s such as Albin Myers, David Tort and Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike. Swedish public television and radio broadcasted live from the festival both on TV and radio with interviews with the performing artists. This type of music had never been broadcasted live in national public productions before in this way, and the 3,5 hours of broadcasting was well received. The TV broadcast of Summerburst had almost as high viewership as Sweden’s European Championship Match in football against England that aired the day before. It showed what direction house music was heading, but also that Summerburst would become the established festival it is today. Just like in 2011 a theme song to represent the festival this year was released. It was a spiked up version of the song from the previous year, with Daniel Gidlund on vocals. ’Never Makes You Weak’, as the song is called, today has over 2 million streams. This was also the year when Swedish House Mafia member Sebastian Ingrosso released ’Calling’ together with his protégé Alesso that played hot during the festival, and also the year when up and coming producer/DJ Otto Knows released his crowd pleaser ’Million Voices’. In total 65,000 people visited Summerburst Festival in Stockholm and Gothenburg, where they got to see DJ’s like Alesso, Adrian Lux, Axwell, Nause, Calvin Harris, Dimitri Vangelis & Wyman, David Guetta, Icona Pop, Tiesto, Avicii, Nicky Romero, Sebastian Ingrosso and Deadmau5.
